Getting to the Heart of the Matter: An Overview of Cardiovascular Genetics

  • This webinar is a 1-hour overview of cardiovascular genetics designed to provide genetic counselors and other genetics professionals with the tools necessary to offer genetic counseling and testing in this dynamic field. We will first familiarize you with the anatomy and functions of the heart. We will then focus on four large categories of cardiovascular genetics, including inherited arrhythmias, cardiomyopathies, familial aneurysms and familial hypercholesterolemia. For each of these, we will provide general information about the nature of the disease and genetic testing, along with red flags that may be apparent in a family history. There are many aspects of cardiovascular genetic counseling that are common to all genetic counseling. While we will touch on these, we will also highlight unique components of cardiovascular genetic counseling sessions and point out important resources to use when seeing families for cardiovascular genetic counseling and testing.
