The glutamate receptor, ionotropic, AMPA3 gene (GRIA3 OMIM 305915) encodes a type of glutamate receptors in the central nervous system. Signaling pathways mediated by the ionotropic glutamate receptors contribute to human brain development and cognitive function. The GRIA3 gene is located at Xq25 and contains 15 exons. Missense mutations, deletions, and duplications in GRIA3 have been observed in families with X-linked mental retardation (Wu Y et al. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA. 2007;104(46):18163-18168).
